PayPal's regulated US dollar stablecoin
PayPal USD (PYUSD) is a US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Paxos Trust Company and distributed by PayPal. Launched in August 2023, PYUSD is fully backed by US dollar deposits, short-term Treasuries, and similar cash equivalents. Regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), PYUSD can be used for payments within PayPal's ecosystem of over 400 million users. It represents one of the most significant moves by a traditional fintech giant into the stablecoin space.
